The purpose of this module is to provide general guidance about how to perform and communicate the results of brain death testing. Please refer to your hospital’s brain death policy for specifics about how brain death testing should occur. In cases where the training module and your hospital’s brain death policy conflict, your hospital’s brain death policy should take precedence.
The Gift of Life Institute training module includes the option to participate in research to study the module’s impact. While participating in research is not necessary to complete the module or to receive brain death testing privileges, we encourage you to participate as the information will help guide future training efforts.
Instructions:
1. Complete the demographic and pre-training survey questions found here, using your University of Pennsylvania email address. Click “Next,” then “Submit”.
2. Click the provided link in the pre-training survey to access the Gift of Life Institute Online University’s learning management system (LMS). Please note that you may be instructed to log into the LMS with your email address and a password of 111111, but this should be ignored – you will set your own username and password when creating your account in the LMS (see following two instructions).
3. Create an account within the LMS. Click on the “Sign Up” button, then enter the Enrollment Key Name (Pennmedicine) when asked. After you’ve entered the Enrollment Key Name, click on the “Sign Up” button.
4. Provide your first and last names, a username, your University of Pennsylvania email address, a password (minimum of 6 characters), and your hospital name in the “Location” field. Click “Sign Up”.
5. On the main Gift of Life Online University page, scroll down to “My Courses”. Find the “Determination of Brain Death and Family…” option and click “Start”. (Note that you have one year to complete this course after registering; this does not refer to the frequency with which this module must be completed for brain death testing privileges.)
6. Within the “Determination of Brain Death and Family Communication Physician Training Program” option, click “Enroll”, then “Start”.
7. You will be directed to the training module. If you do not see it, click on the double down-pointing arrows in the upper right corner to expand it.
8. Click on the module to start it, and follow the instructions.
9. The module will suggest that you download the companion application, which provides a virtual reality training supplement. If you are unable to access the application in a timely manner, the certificate of completion can still be acquired, though we encourage you to revisit this educational supplement at a later time.
10. The final slide of the module will provide a link to access the post-training assessment.
11. Complete the post-training assessment, providing your University of Pennsylvania email address.
12. Once you have completed the post-training assessment, return to the course and click on “Exit Course X” in the upper right corner. Within a few minutes, you will receive a completion email which includes the same link to the post-training assessment that was on the final slide in the module; click on that link only if you did not already complete the assessment. If you did not receive this completion email, check your spam folder.
13. You must score 75% or higher on the post-training assessment to receive a certificate of completion (and to be eligible for CME credit, though this is not necessary for brain death testing privileges). If you score below this, you will be provided a link to retake the test.
14. After receiving a score of 75% or higher, you will receive a certificate of completion by email (if you did not receive this email, check your spam folder), which should be submitted to the Office of Medical Affairs as proof of successful completion (see contact information below).
To submit your certificate of completion, or for questions about brain death testing privileges, you may contact the Office of Medical Affairs through the following contact information:
